What is a critique?

"My definition, since others I found are quite vague: A critique is basically a written analysis which is intended to help an artist improve, not just to point out every flaw or every remarkable thing you could find about a specific piece, be it literature or art, but rather say why you think the piece is effective or suggest what you think could be done to improve the piece. The critic should at least have the knowledge and understanding about the medium they are critiquing."

However, I have noticed some people have disabled critiques. If I want to wonder why, do they have low self-esteem, or do they want to avoid harsh critiques so that their so called pride won't be broken?



I wish to express my gratitude to all the people who gave me critiques in my works through the years. This journal entry was intended as thank you for them. I also want to spread the meaning of critique to people who hasn't thought about it.

In a sense, I love to see everyone improve in their skills as an artist.

"Don't be afraid to take critiques. Heed everyone's word. However harsh some critiques can be, don't forget, it's to make you IMPROVE. So don't feel bad if your work has too much mistakes. By pointing out the mistakes, you will eventually know what's needed to be improved, and of course, there becomes a saying 'learning from mistakes'. So thus, the meaning of critique is born."



The Noticeable Difference between Flaming and A Critique?

"Flaming brings people's morale down. May brings out their inferiority complex.
A critique helps people improve their skills as artists."
